President Muhammadu Buhari will Tuesday meet with Nigerian state governors over the unpaid salaries to workers in some states.
Although not officially confirmed yet, the meeting is expected to focus on the modality of sourcing funds for the governors to enable them defray the debts to pay salaries.
“The President has graciously accepted our overtures to him to help us. Some of us are owing workers over nine months salary arrears and this has brought activities in the public service to a standstill. We hope the President helps this time,” a top government official in Osun State, one of the worst hit states said.
Salaries owed to state workers are estimated at N110 billion.
At least 18 states are owing workers. This has caused serious hardship for the workers and their families in the affected states.
In some of the states, some of the workers have resorted to begging for survival.
Last week, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District promised to donate half of his wardrobe allowance to Osun workers, a gesture that has sparked a verbal war between him and the governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola.
