A youth wing within the Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC), Progressive Coalition (PC), has urged the party’s leadership at national and state levels to allow due process in the emergence of candidates at the primary.
The group noted that the opportunity for the progressives to move out of opposition and becoming members of the ruling party since 2003 is around the corner.
It urged the opportunity not to be slipped off with the alleged imposition of an aspirant to become the candidate.
A statement issued in Akure, the state capital yesterday and signed by its chairman, Adewetan Vincent and Secretary, Akinte Martins, said the rumours on the alleged imposition of a candidate within the party has started generating bad blood in the sunshine state.
The group said: “We are so bothered because of the negative effects the development will cause as foot soldiers for the APC. We are tired of being in the opposition. It is imperative for all of us to speak with one voice in order to dislodge the ‘unimpressive’ administration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“The November 26 governorship poll is germane to all progressive-minded people because it will end the cosmetic government of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and also return the genuine power to progressives’ camp that is masses-oriented.
“We plead with our party leaders to maintain their stand of not interfering, induce or influence the process of the primary election to favour any governorship aspirants.”
The coalition hinted that some aspirants have alleged that three notable leaders have met and they were mandated to pick one of the aspirants as candidate without allowing the 3,000 delegates saddled with the responsibility of choosing the standard-bearer through their votes to perform.
The group noted that other aspirants have started reacting to the “unconfirmed rumour” of the alleged imposition.
The statement added: “It is obvious from our findings that the pauprised citizens of the state, who are the larger part of the electorate, will only accept from the APC any popular candidate that emerges through a process of credible primary election that represents the overall interest of the people.”
