Factional  National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has written a letter to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu,  asking the commission not to monitor the party’s national convention slated for August 17.
He said the commission should ignore the letter written to it by the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led PDP Caretaker Committee, inviting it to monitor the proposed convention.
Makarfi had written a letter to the commission,  notifying it of a proposed August 17, PDP national convention.
The convention is to hold in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Sheriff in a letter dated August 2, informed the commission that the Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee remains illegal and has no powers under the PDP constitution to convene its national convention.
The letter was said to have been received at INEC office on Wednesday.
The letter pointedly informed the commission that the only body that can call for and ratify activities culminating to a National Convention of the PDP, “is the National Executive Committee headed by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman as enshrined in Article 31 (2)(a) of the Constitution of the PDP.
The former governor of Borno State said the commission and the general public should note that the PDP under his leadership was not planning any national convention.
He said that as the national chairman, he has yet to  be authorised by the National Executive Committee to call for any convention.
