Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has said he will allow the court decide the leadership crisis in the party despite the peace moves initiated by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi- led National Caretaker Committee.
Makarfi and the Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin had told journalists after an extended caucus meeting on Thursday that negotiations have been on-going to reconcile with the former National Chairman. Makarfi further observed that the presence of Senator Buruji Kashamu at the meeting was an indication of a fruitful reconciliation process.
“You can see by yourself our brother, friend and associate, Senator Buruji Kashamu. That is evidence of the reconciliation making progress and I can assure you that we will never foreclose full reconciliation with Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and others that may still be associated with him,” Makarfi declared.
But Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, who was appointed by Sheriff as his deputy, said there has not been any agreement yet reached between Sheriff and the caretaker committee. Said Ojougboh: “I have the permission of Sheriff to inform our teeming supporters and PDP faithful nationwide that he has not reached any agreement with anybody, neither has he permitted anybody to conclude any process on his behalf. “We are continuing with our cases in court; we respect the rule of law. Sheriff will address a press conference on Monday on the state of our party, PDP.
Our goal remains to return the party to the people and stamp out impunity.” Analysts had interpreted the presence of Buruji at the meeting called by Makarfi as an indication that peace was about to return to the party, after months of leadership crisis. Buruji has been Sheriff’s backbone and was the one who procured the judgements that aborted the May 21 National Convention in Port Harcourt.
